Island-Hopping the BVI: A First-Timer's Guide
The British Virgin Islands are made up of more than 60 islands, cays, and rocky outcrops, and no two feel the same. If it's your first time exploring this stretch of the Caribbean, it can be hard to know where to start. Here's a first-timer's guide to four of the most iconic islands, each one a regular feature on our private charter itineraries aboard Apotheoseas.
Jost Van Dyke: Barefoot Beach Bar Culture
Jost Van Dyke (JVD) is the BVI's beach bar capital, laid-back, sandy-floored, and famous the world over for Foxy's, the legendary bar at the eastern end of the island. White Bay is the postcard shot: powder-white sand, turquoise water, and a string of bars serving up the island's signature Painkiller cocktail.
Best for: groups who want a fun, social afternoon ashore with great swimming right off the beach. It's a regular stop on charters like Takin' It Easy and the High Five tour.
Virgin Gorda: Dramatic Rock Pools and Luxury Resorts
Virgin Gorda is best known for The Baths, a maze of giant granite boulders forming natural pools, grottos, and swim-through caves. It's one of the most photographed spots in the Caribbean, and for good reason.
Beyond The Baths, Virgin Gorda is also home to more refined stops like Saba Rock and the Bitter End Yacht Club, where you can enjoy lunch at Nova Restaurant with views across the North Sound.

Norman Island: Pirate Legend and Underwater Caves
Said to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, Norman Island has a reputation to match its scenery. The Caves at Treasure Point are a snorkeling highlight, riddled with underwater grottos worth exploring, and the floating bar Willy T anchored just offshore is a BVI institution.
Best for: snorkellers and anyone with a taste for a bit of legend along with their swim stop. Central to our Pirate Chaser, Party Cruise, and Chest of Treasure tours.
Anegada: The Outlier Worth the Trip
Unlike the volcanic peaks of the rest of the BVI, Anegada is a flat coral atoll, and it comes with some of the best reef snorkeling in the territory, including Horseshoe Reef, one of the largest coral reefs in the Caribbean. It's further out, which keeps it quieter than the more central islands.
Best for: serious snorkellers and divers looking for the BVI's best reef life, away from the crowds. Ask your captain about working Anegada into a custom full-day itinerary.
Building Your Own Island-Hopping Day
